Apo Six: DCP Danjuma Shot Victims -Police witness

A prosecution witness in the trial of six policemen allegedly involved in the 2005 gruesome murder of six youths of Igbo extraction in Abuja, Police Constable Haruna Mahmud, has told an Abuja High Court that it was Deputy Commissioner of Police [DCP] Ibrahim Danjuma who personally shot the victims.

Six youths – Ifeanyi Ozo, Chinedu Meniru, Isaac Ekene, Paulinus Ogbonna, Anthony Nwokike and Tina Arebun [Female] were gruesomely murdered by some police officers on June 8, 2005, after a night out at Gimbiya Street, Abuja.

Following the recommendations of the Justice Olasunmbo’s Commission, six police officers – DCP Danjuma Ibrahim, ASP Othman Abdulsalami [at large], Nicholas Zakaria, Emmanuel Baba, Ezekiel Acheneje and Sadiq Salami are presently standing trial for the offence of culpable homicide punishable with death.

Giving a blow by blow account of the mind boggling incident under cross-examination on Wednesday, Haruna, who is attached to the Garki Police Station said when the leader of his patrol team, Inspector Suleiman Audu refused DCP Danjuma’s order to shoot at the Peugeot 406 salon car that the deceased persons drove in, “he (Danjuma) alighted from his car, collected the gun from the Inspector and began to shoot at the victim’s car killing four out of the six occupants of the car instantly and leaving two of them unconscious.”

According to his account, “on June 7, 2005, I was on stop and search\patrol duty at Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Garki. Inspector Suleiman Audu headed my patrol team. When I reported at the duty post, I was put on alert by the DCP and after a while, I saw a Peugeot 406 racing towards me, I flashed torch-light at the vehicle for the driver to stop but they refused to stop and after a while, the DCP arrived the scene in a BMW car and tried to stop the victim’s car and when they refused to stop, he ordered the Inspector to fire and when the Inspector refused to fire, he came down from his vehicle, collected the gun from the Inspector and shot at the vehicle of the victims killing four instantly and leaving two unconscious. All the while, I had taken cover watching the scene from afar.”

As if that was not enough, Haruna told Justice Ishaq Bello that the first statement he made to the police that guns were found in the victim’s Peugeot 406 salon car was made under duress as he was under pressure by the Divisional Police Officer [DPO] of Garki Police station where he was attached to.

He also confessed that his testimony before the Okiro Panel was a tissue of lies as he was under pressure from the Police hierarchy.

Justice Ishaq Bello had earlier refused an application by the prosecuting counsel, Chief Chris Uche [SAN] to use the report of the ‘Judicial panel of Inquiry’ in prosecuting the accused persons.

The court had also ordered one of the defence counsel to appear before him or risked appropriate sanctions.
