INEC Promises Improved Security For Election Officials
Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, in Abuja assured election officials of the commission’s commitment to providing them maximum protection during future elections.
Jega said this at the formal presentation of cheques for insurance claims to family representatives of victims of the 2011 post-election violence that erupted in parts of the country.
Each cheque, worth N655, 384, was presented to 42 families under the INEC Harzard Welfare Scheme.
Condoling with the families of the victims, Jega said no amount of money was enough to compensate them for the losses of lives or injuries sustained in the course of the election.
“No amount of monetary compensation can truly compensate for the loss of lives of our beloved ones or even for the injuries that some of our beloved ones may have incurred he said.
“Adding that this is just a token and we in INEC are committed to continue to find all ways and means of ensuring greater protection and security for all those who have accepted to do election duty.
“And together with the NYSC directorate headquarters, we will continue to put heads together with a view to finding better ways of providing security and compensating victims in future.”
The INEC boss described the post-election violence as an unfortunate development in the history of the country, saying that it should not have happened.
He said that the challenge before the country was to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book “so that they can answer for their role in this unfortunate circumstance and also for us to ensure that we take measures that can prevent this kind of thing from happening in future.’’
He said the victims did not die in vain, “but have contributed their own quota to the development of their country, and that is what every citizen should be prepared to do’’.
Representatives of the victims expressed appreciation for the compensation and demanded for more from INEC and the Federal Government.
Mr Paul Isidahowen, brother to one of the deceased, Miss Rita Isidadowen, said no amount of money could make his sister to live again.
He appealed to INEC to recruit at least one member of the families of the deceased persons as part of the compensation package.
Similarly, Mrs Hauwa Mustapha, who lost her husband in a bombing incident at the INEC office in Suleja, urged the Federal Government to give them the same compensation packages as their colleagues in Bauchi State.
Niger Insurance Plc is the underwriter to the INEC Hazard Welfare Scheme.

Don’t Risk Your Legacy, Citizen Begs Jonathan Against 2027 Presidential Race
In a letter titled, “An Open Letter to Former President Goodluck Jonathan,” the observer said Dr Jonathan should be careful not to allow himself to be drawn into partisan calculations driven by ambition rather than national interest.
He cautioned the former president against allowing himself to be used by what he described as desperate political interests.
“I believe this is the time to protect the good name and legacy you have built over the years. You should not allow yourself to be used by desperate political elements who may be more interested in their own ambitions than in the future of Nigeria,” the letter read.
The Social Commentator further warned Dr Jonathan to be wary of those advocating for his comeback, claiming many of them were previously opposed to his administration.
“Many of those calling for your return today were your antagonists, those who frustrated your government back then. You should be careful not to become a pawn in a game designed by others or else they will stain your white with their ‘roforofo’,” he said.
He maintained that Dr Jonathan’s legacy remains defined by his decision to concede defeat in 2015, which he described as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
“Your legacy was built through years of public service and your decision to put the country’s peace above personal ambition at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history. That legacy should not be put at risk because of the desperation of a few politicians,” he added.
Mr Adenuga also alleged that some of the promoters of Dr Jonathan’s return have lost credibility in the public space.
“The truth is that some of the people pushing you to contest have already damaged their own reputations. They should not be allowed to stain your legacy with their soiled hands. What they could not achieve on their own should not be pursued through your name and goodwill,” he stressed.
He concluded by urging the former president to remain above political manoeuvring and protect his place in history.
“History has been kind to you. Preserve that honour and remain above the political games of those who want to use your name for their own purposes,” he wrote.
Recall that former President Goodluck Jonathan recently emerged as the presidential candidate of the Kabiru Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a special convention held in Abuja, where delegates ratified his nomination ahead of the 2027 general elections.
