The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recorded a total of 6,019 seizures with a duty paid value of N4.3 billion in 2012, according to the service.<\/p>\n
A summary of the seizure reports from January to December 2012 was made available to our correspondent yesterday in Abuja, recently.<\/p>\n
According to the report, 308 arrests were made in connection with the seizures, while the number of general goods seized was 3,996.<\/p>\n
A breakdown of other seizures recorded by the service in 2012 include 1,970 cars, 52 motorcycles, five boats and 52 containers.<\/p>\n
In comparative terms, the seizures recorded in 2012 were higher than the 5,784 recorded in 2011.<\/p>\n
However, the duty paid value in 2011 was N8.4 billion, compared with the N4.3 billion in 2012.<\/p>\n
Also there was a decline in the number of arrests in 2012 compared with the 476 arrests recorded by the service in 2011.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, official figures obtained by our correspondent shows that in 2012 the service generated a revenue of N850.8 billion below Federal Government\u2019s target of N872.2 billion.<\/p>\n
A breakdown of the figures in 2012 showed that N508 billion was paid into the Federation Account and N324.8 billion into the Non-Federation account.<\/p>\n
Comparatively, the service collected a total of N850.8 billion in 2012, compared with N741.8 billion in 2011.<\/p>\n
According to the summary of revenue figures in 2012, the service collected N404.8 billion on import duty (cash), N33.6 billion on Negotiable Duty Clearance Certificate.<\/p>\n
The service earned N38.5 billion from excise duty while Common External Tariff Levy (CET) amounted to N29.7 billion and fees, N1.3 billion.<\/p>\n
A competent customs source, however, told our correspondent that more than N53 billion was lost to waivers and concessions in 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
