{"id":52741,"date":"2012-10-05T03:30:05","date_gmt":"2012-10-05T07:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=52741"},"modified":"2012-10-05T03:30:05","modified_gmt":"2012-10-05T07:30:05","slug":"ncc-tasks-telecoms-users-on-rights-defence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=52741","title":{"rendered":"NCC Tasks Telecoms Users On Rights Defence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications<br \/>\nCommission (NCC), Dr Eugene Juwah, on Friday urged telecommunications consumers<br \/>\nin the country to protect their rights.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the First National Telecoms Subscribers Summit<br \/>\nin Lagos, Juwah said they could do this by reporting to the appropriate authorities<br \/>\nany unfair practice by the telecoms operators.<\/p>\n<p>The summit with the theme \u2018\u2019Nigerian Telecoms Revolution:<br \/>\nConsumerism as the Last mile Challenge\u2019\u2019 was organised by the National<br \/>\nAssociation of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS).<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Mr Tony Ojobo, the Director of Public<br \/>\nAffairs, NCC, Juwah urged the consumers to take advantage of the Consumer<br \/>\nAffairs Bureau (CAB), established by the commission to protect their rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a bid to implement this mandate, the commission<br \/>\nestablished the Consumer Affairs Bureau (CAB) in September, 2001,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that one of the commission\u2019s mandates was to protect<br \/>\nand promote the interest of consumers against unfair practices from their<br \/>\nservice providers.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there is a paradigm shift from mere<br \/>\nservice provision to ensuring that consumer satisfaction ranks highest in<br \/>\npriority, in the provision of ICT goods and services.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the telecommunications umpire ensured that<br \/>\nconsumers were compensated when wrongfully billed\/loss of service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consumer occupies the central position in our scheme of<br \/>\nthings and comes top among all our stakeholders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Juwah said that NCC had developed a Consumer Web Portal,<br \/>\nserving as an interactive avenue to disseminate information on its activities<br \/>\nand initiatives toward achieving consumer protection.<\/p>\n<p>He said the portal was also to empower consumers and get<br \/>\nfeedback from them on the performances of service providers as well as the<br \/>\ncommission.<\/p>\n<p>The President of NATCOMS, Mr Deolu Ogunbanjo said that the<br \/>\naim of the Advocacy Group was to foster understanding of consumer issues among<br \/>\nstakeholders in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>He said that NATCOMS had been monitoring and working with<br \/>\nservice providers on regular basis to ensure good quality service delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Ogunbanjo added that the association was charged with the<br \/>\nresponsibility of educating consumers on the protection of their rights and<br \/>\nother telecoms issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Eugene Juwah, on Friday urged telecommunications consumers in the country to protect their rights.
