President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep concern that
\nmany nations are currently placed above Nigeria because the country was not
\npart of past developmental revolutions.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Abuja at the inauguration of the Presidential
\nCommittee on Broadband, he said the nation cannot afford to let the opportunity
\nto participate in the Information Communication Technology\u00a0 passed by.<\/p>\n
To this end, he directed the Ministry of Education to
\nincorporate ICTs in school curriculum.<\/p>\n
Explaining the importance of Broadband, he said it has the
\npotential to facilitate the creation of new industries and introduce
\nsignificant efficiencies into existing ones in all sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n
He also revealed that the National ICT policy has set a
\ntarget of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration by 2017.<\/p>\n
To achieve this lofty goal, he said it had become imperative
\nthat a proper and feasible plan is articulated and hence, government
\nconstituted the committee to develop a comprehensive broadband roadmap for the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
The committee co-chaired by Engr Ernest Ndukwe and Jim Ovia
\nis expected to come up with a Broadband strategy and roadmap for the country.
\nIt has three months to turn in its report.<\/p>\n
The president also explained why the Ministry of
\nCommunication Technology was separated from the Information ministry, saying it
\nwas for the country to leverage on the abundance opportunities in ICT sector.<\/p>\n
He said,\u201dAs at the time we talked about industrial
\nrevolution, this part of the world never participated, we talked about green
\nrevolution, we tried it but it was on the pages of paper. There was no
\nrevolution witnessed in this country. The real technological revolution we
\nnever participated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is why people always say that if you look at our
\nDefence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) that started at the same time
\nas Brazil, Brazil, are building aircraft and we are still managing furniture.
\nSo, technological revolution, we\u00a0 have
\nnot participated.<\/p>\n
