The Nigerian Maritime Administrative and Safety Agency
\n(NIMASA), has called on stakeholders to address the problem of sea robbers and
\npiracy on Nigerian waters.<\/p>\n
NIMASA Director of
\nShipping and development, Capt. Wareedi Enisuoh, made the call in Lagos at a
\nstakeholders\u2019 forum on how to address the hijacking and armed sea robbers\u2019
\nattack on fishing trawlers.<\/p>\n
Enisuoh said that some of the ways to eradicate\u00a0 the activities of sea robbers and the
\nhijackers of fishing trawlers was to improve safety on the Nigeria waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is our natural resource; we have the responsibility to
\nprotect it, and as well have the responsibility to ensure that it works\u201d,
\nEnisuoh said.<\/p>\n
According to him, pirates are sea robbers who prey on ships
\nand rob them of their goods and sometimes capture the ship itself for their own
\npersonal use.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis problem has been with us ever since commerce took to
\nthe oceans, which of course is more than 2000 years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Vikings \u201cSea Raider\u201d actually earned their name from
\ncrimes such as this.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were renowned for attacking ships and coastal towns
\nand ended up being the founding fathers of modern day Britain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Also, Alhaji Inuwa Danladi, technical Director of NIGCOMSAT,
\nsaid that Nigeria communication satellite would enable the navy to network its
\nwarships, submarines and aircraft with operational centres ashore, through
\nhigh-speed data link.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have massive land bodering the sea and we also have a
\nlot of ocean tributaries, we can install security cameras which have high
\nzooming capacity along the landmass.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is for surveillance in our coastal areas, which
\nhappened to be areas of high security threat and interest\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said that National Public Security Communciation System
\n(NPSCS) would be used by the Nigerian Police under the supervision of NIGCOMSAT
\nas network integrated security agent.<\/p>\n
Alhaja Bola Kupolati, Director of Federal Department of
\nFisheries, said that the numbers of registered and actually operating ships
\nhave decreased fast from 265 ships in 2008, to 139 in 2012.<\/p>\n
Kupolati said that the problems were direct consequences of
