Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and Nigerian
\nPhilatelic, a subsidiary of Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), have introduced
\nnew postal stamps to mark the institution\u2019s 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n
Samples of the stamps were made public during the signing of
\na memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two organizations in Zaria,
\nrecently.<\/p>\n
The four different stamps that carry various inscriptions
\nwere designed by the Department of Fine Arts of the Faculty of Arts of the
\nuniversity as part of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha said: \u201cthe
\nwhole process started when Nigerian Philatelic came with a proposal to the
\nuniversity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey seek collaboration between the company and the
\nuniversity so that we can come up with some new things ahead of our 50th
\nanniversary celebration which we went through and accepted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe whole idea is not limited to what will accrue
\nfinancially out of the venture but selling the university within and outside
\nNigeria is also very essential to us.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Describing the venture as very vital, Mustapha said the ABU
\nwas not the first university to partner with NIPOST.<\/p>\n
He said the initial idea was to produce postal stamps in all
\ndenominations but was later scaled down to four different stamps.<\/p>\n
The stamps consist of the picture of the late Premier of the
\ndefunct Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello to be sold at N50, and ABU\u2019s crest
\nwhich will also go for N50.<\/p>\n
Another stamp carries ABU\u2019s Senate building inscription and
\nattracts N90 and Shika brown ship to cost N100.<\/p>\n
The General Manager, Nigerian Philatelic, Mr Duro
\nSomo-Jocobs lauded the efforts of the Vice Chancellor for accepting their
\nproposal as well as the Fine Arts Department for the design.<\/p>\n
He observed that the university had carefully picked some
\nareas through which people would know more of its existence.<\/p>\n
According to Somo-Jocob, reputation is not all about what
\nyou have done but it is all about how many people knew about what you have
\ndone.<\/p>\n
