Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State on Monday, said the state may be wiped out in next 15 years, if nothing serious was done to tackle the problems of erosion in the area.
\nObi said this in Nsukka, Enugu State, at a national conference on Climate Change organised by the Department of Geography, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), with the theme: Climate and Nigeria Environment.\u201d
\nThe governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr Chidi Ezioke, noted that the magnitude of erosion in Nanka Ozubulo, Nkpor and Oko threatened the existence of the state.
\n\u201cMany residents have been displaced, farmlands washed away as well as property destroyed in these affected areas,\u201d he said.
\nHe added that the administration had spent much in trying to arrest the situation but its financial resources were insufficient for success.
\nIn another development, unknown gunmen on Tuesday, stormed Onitsha in Anambra state and abducted three persons at two locations, after fierce shooting that spurred panic among residents in the area.
\nThe suspected kidnappers also killed a mobile policeman, while a stray bullet resulted in the death of a local gin seller.
\nAn eyewitness told The Tide that a group of about eight assailants kidnapped Kingsley Kalu, manager of a Bureau-de-Change in Onitsha and Sky Okoli, owner of Citigate Real Estate Company.
