The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga
\nAshiru, on Tuesday said that Nigeria would continue to support peace-keeping
\noperations as part of its foreign policy.<\/p>\n
Ashiru said in Lagos at the Nigerian Institute of
\nInternational Affairs (NIIA)\u2019s ninth Brainstorming Session that the country
\nwould sustain its post-conflict peace-building and peacekeeping operations
\nfinancing.<\/p>\n
The theme of the two-day session is \u201cNigeria\u2019s Contributions
\nto International Development, Peace and Security:1960 to 2012″.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough sustained participation in UN peace-keeping
\noperations, regional initiatives and mainstreaming of UN resolutions, Nigeria
\ncontinues attainment of the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigeria still remains supportive of the UN Security
\nCouncil\u2019s role and initiatives on conflict situations in Africa and in other
\nparts of the world,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
The minister, represented by the Director-General of NIIA,
\nProf. Bola Akinterinwa, said Nigeria was among the leading contributing
\ncountries to international peacekeeping in the world.<\/p>\n
He said Nigeria had since 1960, participated in more than 50
\nper cent peace-keeping of the total UN peace-keeping mission around the world,
\nin addition to other bilateral, sub-regional and continental peacekeeping.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigeria has remained very active in the United Nations
\nPeace-keeping operations, beginning from the Congo in 1960, to Darfur today, an
\nactivity that cost the country countless lives and funds, all for the good of,
\nand love for its African brothers and sisters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Ashiru, Nigeria\u2019s foreign policy includes
\neffort to tackle terrorism, small and light weapons, children in armed
\nconflicts, women, peace and security, drug trafficking, climate change as well
