{"id":43499,"date":"2012-05-18T14:24:49","date_gmt":"2012-05-18T18:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=43499"},"modified":"2012-05-18T14:24:49","modified_gmt":"2012-05-18T18:24:49","slug":"poor-services-ncc-slams-n1-17bn-fine-on-four-gsm-providers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/2012\/05\/poor-services-ncc-slams-n1-17bn-fine-on-four-gsm-providers\/","title":{"rendered":"Poor Services: NCC Slams N1.17bn Fine On Four GSM Providers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) says four Global<br \/>\nSystem for Mobile (GSM) Communications operators are to pay a cumulative sum of<br \/>\nN1.17 billion penalty for poor Quality of Services (QoS).<\/p>\n<p>In a statement made available to newsmen last Saturday in<br \/>\nLagos, NCC said that MTN, Etisalat, Airtel and Globacom were been sanctioned<br \/>\nfor poor QoS rendered in the months of March and April.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said that details of the penalties had been<br \/>\ncommunicated to the different operators through letters.<\/p>\n<p>It stated that the letters were signed by the Director,<br \/>\nLegal and Regulatory Services, Ms Josephine Amuwa, and the Head of Compliance<br \/>\nMonitoring and Enforcement, Ubale Maska.<\/p>\n<p>The Regulatory body said that MTN and Etisalat were to pay<br \/>\nN360 million each, Airtel would pay N270 million, while Globacom attracted a<br \/>\npenalty of N180 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the operators are to pay the penalties on or before May<br \/>\n21, 2012 or be liable to payment of additional N2.5 million per day for as long<br \/>\nas the contravention persists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe penalties are as a result of the contravention of the<br \/>\nprovisions of the Quality of Service Regulations by the NCC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe operators failed to meet with the minimum standard of<br \/>\nquality of service, including the key performance indicators, (KPIs)\u201d the<br \/>\nstatement noted.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement. the commission has been<br \/>\nmonitoring the performance of the operators on the different parameters as<br \/>\nprovided.<\/p>\n<p>It said that the result showed that the service providers<br \/>\ncontravened the provisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParagraph 13 &amp; Schedule 3, Paragraph 2 of the Quality<br \/>\nof Service Regulation 2012, provides that any company which contravenes this<br \/>\nprovision will be liable to pay fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company is liable to pay the sum of N15 million for<br \/>\neach parameter for a service contravened in the month of March, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA further sum of N2.5 million for each parameter for a<br \/>\nservice for each day the contravention continued throughout the month of April,<br \/>\n2012 will be paid by the operators,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>NCC noted that the performances in January and February were<br \/>\nbelow the specified thresholds but decided to \u201ctake these periods as grace<br \/>\nperiod\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Our correspondent quoted the Executive Vice Chairman of the<br \/>\ncommission as saying that the current penalties were a demonstration of the new<br \/>\nregime of QoS management in the telecommunications industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) says four Global System for Mobile (GSM) Communications operators are to pay a cumulative sum of N1.17 billion penalty for poor Quality of Services (QoS).
