{"id":356680,"date":"2026-07-03T02:42:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T01:42:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=356680"},"modified":"2026-07-02T19:43:59","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T18:43:59","slug":"community-demands-rsgs-intervention-over-chieftaincy-tussle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=356680","title":{"rendered":"Community Demands RSG\u2019s Intervention Over Chieftaincy Tussle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rumueme Council of Chiefs, Elders and Owhor holders has called on the Rivers State Government to constitute a panel of inquiry to uncover the underlying issues surrounding the community\u2019s age-long chieftaincy tussle with a view to finding a lasting solution.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the body, Chief George I. O. Ihunwo, JP, made the appeal during a press briefing held in Rumueme Town, Obio\/Akpor Local Government Area, within the week.<\/p>\n<p>Ihunwo expressed concern over what he described as the unfortunate situation where a once peaceful community has become entangled in a series of court litigations over a matter which, according to him, has a clear traditional direction.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the proposed panel, if constituted, would assist the State Government in arriving at an informed decision before handing over the Staff of Office to the next paramount ruler of the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not the British Empire where a chosen heir ascends to the throne automatically upon the demise of the incumbent King or Queen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He maintained that due processes, both traditionally and otherwise, must be followed before anyone can ascend the throne.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the community cannot be referred to as a \u201cKingdom\u201d on the grounds that it was never historically governed by a king.<\/p>\n<p>He further pointed out that the matter reached the apex court of the country in Appeal No. SC.460\/2010, which was struck out by the court.<\/p>\n<p>Ihunwo also expressed concern over what he described as flagrant disobedience to court judgments by some individuals within the community as well as alleged external interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have also deliberately embarked on disseminating narratives to the public concerning the question of paramount rulership in Rumueme Town which do not align with the settled position of the courts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ihunwo further clarified that titles such as \u201cNye Nwe Eli Rumueme Kingdom\u201d and \u201cApiti of Rumueme Kingdom\u201d are unknown to the history and traditional heritage of the people.<\/p>\n<p>He appealed to the public and relevant authorities to disregard claims being circulated concerning the community, expressing confidence that the true position of events would soon emerge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>King Onunwor<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rumueme Council of Chiefs, Elders and Owhor holders has called on the Rivers State Government to constitute a panel of inquiry to uncover the underlying issues surrounding the community\u2019s age-long chieftaincy tussle with a view to finding a lasting solution.
