{"id":350771,"date":"2025-12-22T01:03:52","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T00:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=350771"},"modified":"2025-12-21T22:09:01","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T21:09:01","slug":"usamali-builds-oil-communities-resilience-against-environmental-degradation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=350771","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0Usamali Builds Oil Communities\u2019 Resilience against Environmental Degradation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The impact of oil exploration activities and climate change have continued to devastate the Niger Delta of Nigeria, with oil bearing communities in parts of the region, such as the Orashi area in Rivers State, suffering the harsh impact of these activities.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Research shows that local communities and citizens living at the grassroots, particularly women, are directly impacted by the environmental degradation, flooding and others that result from these manifestations.<\/p>\n<p>In the light of this, non-governmental organisation, Ese Usamali Foundation For Rural Development (EUFORDe), has held a forum for women and other members of oil impacted communities, tagged: \u2018Voices from the Grassroots,\u2019 and aimed at building their resilience and mitigation efforts against climate change and environmental degradation<\/p>\n<p>The forum, with the theme: \u2018Building Resilience for Oil Spill Impacted Ahoada Communities,\u2019 organised with support from Global Green Grants, was held in Ahoada Community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, on December 5, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Director of Ese Usamali Foundation For Rural Development, Mercy Elemchukwu-James, said women are at the forefront of efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change and environmental degradation.<\/p>\n<p>The event, therefore, was \u201cdesigned for community women impacted by oil spills, flooding and other environmental degradation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Community women were enlightened by resource persons on new opportunities for sustainable agricultural practices and water management techniques that cushion the impact of oil spills.<\/p>\n<p>Lectures were also delivered on Self-care and Trauma-care, with focus on physical and mental health of the population, and increasing access to health-related resources and services; as well as on Food security and women\u2019s critical role in decision making in oil spill and flood situations in communities<\/p>\n<p>Elemchukwu-James pointed out that the event created a forum for stakeholders, civil society actors and others to dialogue on measures at advancing inclusive and sustainable livelihoods of community women.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed the need for collaborative efforts towards achieving mitigation efforts, while underscoring EUFORDe\u2019s commitment to \u201cfostering partnerships as a critical driver for achieving a healthy community and sustainable development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elemchukwu-James described participants\u2019 design of \u2018Community Resilience Plan,\u2019 to manage and combat environmental degradation and crises, as part of achievements recorded at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The forum also witnessed the launching of EUFORDs\u2019 Center For Resilience and Rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis center is established to build resilience as Trauma-Care for victims of environmental degradation, support for survivors of Gender Based Violence (GBV) and a platform where victims of environmental injustice and other GBV cases can seek redress,\u201d Elemchukwu-James said.<\/p>\n<p>Participants celebrated the milestones achieved and charted a path toward greater impact in the coming years.
