{"id":348074,"date":"2025-09-22T15:04:37","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T14:04:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=348074"},"modified":"2025-09-22T15:04:37","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T14:04:37","slug":"nis-ends-decentralised-passport-production-after-62-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=348074","title":{"rendered":"NIS Ends Decentralised Passport Production After 62 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially ended passport production at multiple centres, transitioning to a single, centralised system for the first time in 62 years.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the disclosure during an inspection of the Nigeria\u2019s new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja, last Thursday.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He stated that since the establishment of NIS in 1963, Nigeria had never operated a central passport production centre, until now, marking a major reform milestone.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe project is 100 per cent ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services,\u201d Tunji-Ojo said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He explained that old machines could only produce 250 to 300 passports daily, but the new system had a capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports every day.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWith this, NIS can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation,\u201d he added, describing it as a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe promised two-week delivery, and we\u2019re now pushing for one week.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cAutomation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians,\u201d the minister said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He noted that centralisation, in line with global standards, would improve uniformity and enhance the overall integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Tunji-Ojo described the development as a step toward bringing services closer to Nigerians while driving a culture of efficiency and total passport system reform.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to him, the centralised production system aligns with President Bola Tinubu\u2019s reform agenda, boosting NIS capacity and changing the narrative for improved service delivery.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\" dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially ended passport production at multiple centres, transitioning to a single, centralised system for the first time in 62 years.
