{"id":346579,"date":"2025-08-11T01:03:54","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T00:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=346579"},"modified":"2025-08-10T21:23:50","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T20:23:50","slug":"lagos-doctors-threaten-indefinite-strike-over-salary-deductions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/2025\/08\/lagos-doctors-threaten-indefinite-strike-over-salary-deductions\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos doctors threaten indefinite strike over salary deductions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Lagos State branch, has accused the State Treasury Office, STO, of introducing what it describes as a \u201ccrisis-inducing\u201d revised medical salary structure, which allegedly triggered \u201cunjust and unacceptable\u201d deductions from doctors\u2019 July 2025 salaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">In a statement issued yesterday by its chairman, Dr Saheed Babajide Kehinde, the association lamented that the issue remains unresolved despite several interventions, including a three-day warning strike by the Medical Guild, the umbrella body for doctors in the state\u2019s public service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">According to the NMA, the revised pay scale implemented by the STO undermines the welfare and professional interests of medical and dental practitioners in government-owned facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">The association warned that if the deductions are not reversed, Lagos State risks an indefinite doctors\u2019 strike that could paralyse operations across public hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">\u201cIt is regrettable that despite all measures to avert disruption in healthcare services, including the three-day warning strike, the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies appear indifferent to the Medical Guild\u2019s notice of an impending indefinite strike,\u201d the statement read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">The NMA urged the Commissioner for Health and all Permanent Secretaries within the health sector to safeguard the \u201cintegrity, dignity, security, and welfare\u201d of doctors in the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">It also cautioned that should the strike proceed, the leadership of the state\u2019s health sector would bear full responsibility \u201cfor failing to ensure the refund of the illegal deductions from July 2025 salaries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">The association also advised its members to carefully review their July payslips against the STO\u2019s revised salary scale. It warned that the current policy could exacerbate the \u201cJapa\u201d trend, the migration of Nigerian healthcare professionals in search of better opportunities abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 15.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">\u201cEnough of the inaction by members of the medical profession at the helm of Lagos State\u2019s health sector.
