The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) says its work force has resolved to\u00a0 embark on\u00a0 industrial action today on shipping lines across the country.
\nThe union said its work force is set to resume its suspended strike action after failed negotiations with shipping companies regarding the Minimum Standard Condition of Service as agreed by the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) in the shipping sector.
\nPresident General, MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, stated this in a statement signed by Head of Media, John Ikemefuna.
\nAdeyanju said the union had resolved to embark on industrial action, which was shelved in June, 2023.
\nHe said by today, 30th October, 2023,\u00a0 if the lines refuse to meet their demands, MWUN would paralyse maritime activities in the shipping lines.
\nAdeyanju said when truce was almost in sight, the representatives of the shipping lines saddled with the responsibility of negotiating with the union, \u201cbecame lackadaisical towards the entire exercise, which gave them away as lacking the mandate to take decisions and their cold feet on the matter subsequently led to the collapse of the negotiations.
\n\u201cConsequent upon this, MWUN reiterates that the shipping branch of the union will commence the suspended strike action throughout the nation\u2019s ports after the expiration of the renewed seven-day ultimatum issued\u201d.
\nThe union also issued a fresh ultimatum to shipping lines operating in Nigeria over an alleged failure to conclude negotiations on a standard condition of service for their employees.
\nThe strike, Adeyanju said, would be joined by three other branches of the union, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), dockworkers, and seafarers, who are expected to participate fully in the industrial Action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
