{"id":299784,"date":"2022-07-18T05:28:44","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T04:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=299784"},"modified":"2022-07-18T05:28:44","modified_gmt":"2022-07-18T04:28:44","slug":"mts-partners-nmla-against-victimised-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/2022\/07\/mts-partners-nmla-against-victimised-members\/","title":{"rendered":"MTS Partners NMLA Against Victimised Members"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mission to Seafarers (MTS) says it would partner with Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA) to protect its members who are victimised on board vessels.<br \/>\nThe partnership,\u00a0 MTS said, would also bail seafarers who may be arrested and victimised in Nigeria over infractions or crimes committed by their ship owners.<br \/>\nChairman, Management Committee, MTS, Lagos, Adebayo Babatunde Sarumi, made this known during the 2022 Annual Sea Sunday Service held at \u201cOur Saviours Church\u201d, TBS, Lagos.<br \/>\nSarumi\u00a0 said\u00a0 the partnership is part of an enhanced effort to demonstrate gratitude to seafarers for their invaluable contributions to global trade.<br \/>\nThe former Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), also said the MTS, Lagos, would significantly improve the Seafarers\u2019 Centre in Apapa.<br \/>\nHe indicated that MTS\u2019 partnership with NMLA to provide legal representation became imperative now that rising global statistics show that many vessels are getting arrested and seafarers are increasingly detained over crimes or offences by owners of vessels.<br \/>\nSarumi stressed the need for more stakeholders\u2019 partnership for a vibrant MTS centre, equipped with modern facilities and the requisite personnel to attend to seafarers.<br \/>\nHe noted that, \u201cThe seafarer is a worker that the world is yet to truly understand.<br \/>\n\u201cThese are workers who carry everything imported, that citizens of any nation utilise.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen we were younger, the Seafarers\u2019 Centre in Apapa was a beehive of activities.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen seafarers come to Lagos ports, we bring them to that Apapa Centre to care for them.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter spending 6 -10 weeks on the waters, when seafarers come to the shores of a nation that is not their home, it\u2019s only befitting that they have a place where they are cared for psychologically, spiritually and physically.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is no better place to go than an establishment set up by a Christian organisation which is what MTS stands for,\u201d Sarumi said.<br \/>\nHe encouraged the church and other well-meaning Nigerians to collaborate with MTS Lagos to make seafarers that come to the nation\u2019s shores realise that the work they put in is truly appreciated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mission to Seafarers (MTS) says it would partner with Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA) to protect its members who are victimised on board vessels.
