Senator\u00a0 Idris Umar, Minister of Transport,\u00a0 last Monday urged shipping lines and terminal operators to review downward their rates and charges.<\/p>\n
Umar made the call while declaring open a joint meeting of the Committees of the Union of African Shippers Councils in Abuja.<\/p>\n
He said that many of the charges were unjustifiable and arbitrary.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are all aware of the enormous challenges of escalating costs of the carriage of goods facing the sub-region.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs shippers\u2019 councils in the sub-region, your role is to create favourable conditions for the promotion of the international trade of the sub-region.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo do this, the union is expected to devise measures that will promote fair trade practices, transparency, regional trade stability and enhance mutual co-operation among members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Umar was represented by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Capt. Adamu Biu.<\/p>\n
He said that the meeting was being held as a result of the resolutions of the 8th Ordinary General Assembly of the Union held in Niamey, Niger Republic, between July 20 and 21.<\/p>\n
Umar also said that the meeting was being held in recognition of the compelling need to revitalise the two standing committees of the union.<\/p>\n
The minister said the two committees had onerous tasks, especially with the forecast of gloomy global economic situation and its anticipated effects in Africa.<\/p>\n
He urged the union to deliberate on the on-going World Trade Organisation\u2019s (WTO) negotiation on trade facilitation and the harmonisation instruments.<\/p>\n
According to him, the instruments included Single Window, Cargo Tracking Note, Freight Exchange and Container Security Initiatives.<\/p>\n
The meeting is being attended by representatives of 16 countries. They are Nigeria, Gabon, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun and Senegal.<\/p>\n
Others are Congo, Cote D\u2019ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equitorial Guinea, Mali, Togo, Guinea Conakry, Ghana and Niger.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
