Despite the constitutional empowerment to acquire land and properties at will, Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi said his administration never used force in acquiring properties in the state for purposes of road expansion.
\nGovernor Amaechi made the assertion through the Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Barrister Osima Ginah at the yearly Membership Continuous Professional Development Programme organised by the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) in Port Harcourt recently.
\nThe Rivers State chief executive stated that government took proper steps in ensuring that properties were rightly assessed, valued and compensation paid to owners
\n\u201cThe present administration has taken time to follow due process in the demolition exercise\u201d, Amaechi noted, \u201cin most cases consumer rates were paid which is not restricted to Land Use Act\u201d.
\nHe said compensation was usually paid prior to the construction of roads and bridges, stressing that the Ministry of Finance was equally directed to equally pay compensation to landlords who died during the exercise.
\nAmaechi averred that he runs an open government to accommodate public views and opinion, warning, \u201cif you are not allowed to see a commissioner try to petition such commissioner to the government\u201d.
\nThe governor declared that the present administration reads the support of professionals to fast track development of the state.
\nEarlier in his speech, Chairman of NIESV Rivers State branch, Sir Mark Nemieboka said the theme of the programme \u201cUrban Renewal and Property Values\u201d, was choosen at a time the state government was upgrading the city of Port Harcourt.
\nBy embarking on an urban renewal drive, he said the present administration have improved the living environment and infrastructural facilities for the populace.
\nSir Nemieboka commended the government for adopting the three tools of urban renewal namely, conservation, rehabilitation and clearance and redevelopment.
\nHowever, the Rivers NIESV boss was of the opinion that clearance and redevelopment are costly and controversial expressing the hope that through meaningful dialogue the scheme will be amicably resolved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
