{"id":221768,"date":"2019-11-29T06:31:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T05:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=221768"},"modified":"2019-11-29T06:31:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-29T05:31:05","slug":"nigerian-editors-oppose-fake-news-hate-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=221768","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian Editors Oppose  Fake News, Hate Speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Editors under the aegis of the Nigerian Guild of Editors yesterday expressed their opposition to fake news and hate speech.<br \/>\nThe Acting President of the Guild, Mustapha Isah, stated the group\u2019s position in Sokoto at the opening of the 15th All Nigeria Editors\u2019 Conference (ANEC). \u201c The Nigerian Guild of Editors is not in support and will never support fake news and hate speech.<br \/>\n\u201c Our members are trained professionally.\u201d It is true that the social media space, like any other ecoystem, is being abused by some people,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe, however, said the guild was not in support of any move to \u201csurreptitiously\u201d curtail press freedom. Isah also advised government to work with critical stakeholders in the media industry to address the challenges relating to fake news and hate speech.<br \/>\nHe said the guild chose the 2019 theme of the conference, \u201cA Distressed Media: Impact on Government, Governance and Society,\u201d with a view to focusing on the media as a business.<br \/>\nIsah added that the theme was also meant \u201c to focus on Nigeria and the sustenance of our democracy because without a robust media, democracy suffers.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said the current economic challenges had affected the business of journalism, warning that practitioners must survive first to perform their constitutional responsibility of holding government accountable to the people.<br \/>\n\u201cThe constitution gives the media an enormous responsibility of holding governments accountable to the people without providing for us the economic and the constitutional protection to do our duty. \u201c The media is passing through a tough phase.
