Alhaji Hussaini Abdulkadir,\u00a0the Area Comptroller,\u00a0Nigeria Customs Service\u00a0for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States, said\u00a0that the command generated more than N260 million as revenue from January to date.<\/p>\n
The revenue generated by the command\u00a0from January to date is more than N20 million higher than this year\u2019s target of N240 million.<\/p>\n
Abdulkadir told newsmen in Sokoto on Thursday that the command achieved the feat with the adoption of a religious-based approach to its revenue generation effort.<\/p>\n
The comptroller said that the approach had forced\u00a0second hand car dealers to come forward to pay for their vehicles\u2019 customs duties.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThis\u00a0is the first time car dealers are coming forward to customs offices in the area command to register their vehicles without any molestation.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that the area command would\u00a0continue to partner with the religious leaders to sensitise their followers to the need to pay duty on any good coming into the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur\u00a0primary targets are the Imams of Friday\u00a0Jumat Mosques in the zone, so that they can preach special sermons on what the society will benefit if revenue is\u00a0generated for the Federal Government,\u201d Abdulkadir said.<\/p>\n
The area comptroller noted that\u00a0\u201cso far, the command has generated more than N260 million as revenue from January\u00a0to date.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur revenue target for 2010 was N240 million and you can see what we have succeeded in collecting\u00a0with various strategies\u00a0put in place to generate more revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n
The customs chief added that\u00a0competent officers had been stationed at strategic\u00a0locations at the borders to arrest and prosecute smugglers.<\/p>\n
Abdulkadir said: \u201cWe\u00a0have introduced foot patrol and the use of camels and donkeys to check the activities of\u00a0smugglers.\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u00a0solicited\u00a0the support of the rural communities at the borders to enable officers posted to such areas to discharge their assignments.<\/p>\n
Abdulkadir urged\u00a0the officers\u00a0and men of the command to continue to put in their best \u201cas the hard working ones will be rewarded\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
