Determined to effectively check smuggling of prohibited goods into the country, including arms ammunition in the election year, the Nigerian Customs Service (NSC) said it is \u201cputting together a crack team of anti smuggling operatives, well equipped with\u00a0 helicopters, bullet proof patrol vehicles, boats and all the needed arms to ensure\u00a0 total blockage of air, land and water, making it impossible for illicit traders to succeed\u201d<\/p>\n
Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Abdulahi Dikko who gave this indication recently in Abuja said in view of the recent attempt by evil people to import 13 containers of arms and ammunitions into the country, it is the belief of the management of the Nigerian Customs Service\u00a0 that such enemies of Nigerians would like to try other means\u00a0 and routes to bring contrabands into the country, Consequently, NCS he said taking decisive action by this operation code named \u2013 \u201cOPERATION, CINNAKA\u201d saying \u201cthe operation will not give preference to anybody who\u00a0 flouts the laws\u201d.<\/p>\n
To enable the operators of the NCS\u00a0 discharge their responsibility effectively, the management has acquired the two helicopters, five bullet, prove patrol vehicles 40 Hilux Jeeps\u00a0 including a strong arsenal of arms and ammunition.<\/p>\n
He said the new anti-smuggling\u00a0 team is without prejudice to the existing logistics available in customs commands across the country, adding that the desperation\u00a0 of the criminal elements to harm the country called for a total war against arms smugglers in particular and smugglers of other illicit goods in general.<\/p>\n
The Customs boss further called on all well meaning\u00a0 Nigerians to co-operate and divulge\u00a0 information in any suspicious import or export.<\/p>\n
To those who may like to test our resolve, let me assure you that we have the might and the government support to crush and bring this emerging high level crime to a halt\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He assured legitimate businessmen and women that they had nothing to worry about, as the team would work against only those who liked to do the wrong thing, stating that the NCS management had provided maximum support for the prosecution of the assignment.<\/p>\n
