The Federation of Construction Industry has blamed\u00a0regulatory authorities\u00a0for the high rate of building collapse in the country. Mr Mobolaji Williams, the President of the federation, said this at its Annual General Meeting and seminar in Abuja.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you talk of collapsed buildings, it is because the supervising ministries and\u00a0the supervising departments have not controlled stages of\u00a0such constructions\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAcross\u00a0the world, from the moment you are putting your foundation, you must\u00a0get your certificate after inspection by the regulatory authority to show that\u00a0it has been done well,\u201d Williams noted. According to him, different certificates are supposed to be issued at different stages of construction to certify that it is in order.<\/p>\n
Williams said the\u00a0process was not being followed\u00a0in Nigeria, adding: \u201cThat is what we are now looking at to ensure that we don\u2019t have collapsed structures.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the industry was facing a lot of\u00a0 challenges, stating that rods being used for reinforcement of buildings were not the right size.<\/p>\n
\u201cInstead of using a 12mm rod, in the market you only get 8.5mm rod and they will sell it to you\u00a0for 12mm. So what do you expect from the strength of an 8.5mm rod\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe man that is going there to buy the rod does not know and\u00a0he has not gone there with a calibrator to check.\u00a0 The market man just tells you it is 12mm, then\u00a0you buy and at the end of the day, you have a collapsed\u00a0building,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n
The president said the Nigeria Society of Engineers\u00a0and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria were working hard to check the menace.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
