Rivers State Governor,Chief Nyesom Wike, has charged local government caretaker committee chairmen to provide atmosphere for investors and peace in their areas.
\nSpeaking during the inauguration of the Caretaker Committee Chairmen at Government House last Wednesday, the governor warned against illegal tax on businesses saying the vision of his administration, is to make sure investments thrive.
\nHe informed them that they have no right to charge arbitrary\u00a0 levies and\u00a0 taxes, pointing\u00a0 out\u00a0 that the local government areas have been restricted\u00a0 to the collection of\u00a0 tenement\u00a0 rates.
\nThe governor maintained that if peace and investment thrive, then, jobs will be available to the youths and the state will prosper.
\n\u201cWe must do things according to law for business to thrive and you should avoid causing crisis in your areas,\u201d Wike warned.
\nHe reiterated his earlier warning on the need for the chairmen to pay workers salaries first, and also warned Treaurers of Local Councils to stop colluding with chairmen to divert funds meant for workers welfare.
\nHe said because\u00a0 most Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen usually misplace their\u00a0 priorities, hence, it is difficult\u00a0 to\u00a0 recommend\u00a0 them for higher\u00a0 service after\u00a0 their\u00a0 terms\u00a0 in office.
\nThe governor said: \u201cIf you\u00a0 think this is the end of your\u00a0 political\u00a0 careers, then, do as you wish\u00a0 in office.
\n\u201cHowever, I advise you\u00a0 to\u00a0 serve in ways that will help you\u00a0 build your\u00a0 political\u00a0 careers.\u00a0 Use your appointments to serve the entire people of your respective local government areas \u201c.
\nHe advised the Council Chairmen to focus their attention\u00a0 on payment of salaries\u00a0 and cooperate with\u00a0 security agencies to maintain security\u00a0 in their local government areas.
\nGovernor Wike added that there is no room for the misappropriation of resources on the part of the Caretaker Committee Chairmen\u00a0 as steps have been taken to ensure that they are responsive to the needs of the people.
\nOf the 23 Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen sworn in by Governor Wike, 10 were\u00a0 newly appointed while 13 Caretaker Committee Chairmen were reappointed.
