{"id":124331,"date":"2016-03-04T03:41:12","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T02:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=124331"},"modified":"2016-03-04T06:44:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-04T05:44:07","slug":"senate-will-expunge-anti-social-media-provisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=124331","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Senate Will Expunge Anti-Social Media Provisions\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate will expunge Sec<br \/>\ntion 4 of the Anti-Frivolous Petitions Bill, popularly known as \u2018Anti-Social Media Bill,\u2019 to give the media the freedom it deserved, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has assured.<br \/>\nThis is contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant on New Media, Mr Bankole Omishore and issued to newsmen on Friday in Abuja.<br \/>\nThe statement said that Saraki gave the assurance while delivering a keynote address at an interactive session of Social Media Week in Lagos.<br \/>\nHe promised that the National Assembly would not pass any bill that would gag the media or infringe on the rights of Nigerians.<br \/>\nSaraki recounted the critical role played by online media in the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections.<br \/>\nHe said that social media ensured that manipulation of votes was reduced to the barest minimum because results were posted online as the elections progressed.<br \/>\nHe urged Nigerians to continue to contribute to the development of the country through dialogue and debate on social media.<br \/>\nThe president assured that the legislature would be open to Nigerians as part of its effort to ensure transparency and accountability.<br \/>\nHe said that the recent interactive session between the National Assembly and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) was part of such efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate will expunge Sec tion 4 of the Anti-Frivolous Petitions Bill, popularly known as \u2018Anti-Social Media Bill,\u2019 to give the media the freedom it deserved, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has assured.
