{"id":112577,"date":"2015-06-12T07:54:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-12T06:54:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=112577"},"modified":"2015-06-12T07:54:23","modified_gmt":"2015-06-12T06:54:23","slug":"ex-dg-urges-review-of-law-on-licensing-broadcast-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=112577","title":{"rendered":"Ex-DG Urges Review Of Law On Licensing  Broadcast Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government<br \/>\nhas been urged to review the law on licensing\/ownership of the broadcast media to save the industry from collapse.<br \/>\nDr Tom Adaba, former Director General of National Broadcasting Commission, made the call in Jos recently.<br \/>\nHe spoke at a Two-day Workshop on Objective and Sensitive Reportage of Conflicts for Editors and Reporters.<br \/>\nAdaba also called for a review of licensing of broadcast media in the country by the presidency.<br \/>\nHe added that the law on licensing the broadcast media made by the IBB regime in 1983 had become obsolete.<br \/>\nHe said the law did not encourage professionalism as the president awarded such licenses as political patronage.<br \/>\nAdaba stated that new legislation was needed to back up the law for professionalism in the industry<br \/>\n\u201cLicences are awarded to loyalists and not core professionals.\u2019\u2019<br \/>\nHe condemned the practice where such loyalists were partisan in their media contents.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Federal Government should take a second look at the law on licensing of the ownership of the broadcast media to save the industry from collapse\u2019\u2019, he said.<br \/>\nAdaba also said the military handling of publicity pertaining to the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East was lacking in depth.<br \/>\nHe said the Mike Omeri team had never shown a picture of what they tell the press concerning the war on the insurgents. \u201cThis is all wrong.\u2019\u2019<br \/>\nHe attributed this to the tension that the military had in dealing with the press and could not trust it with sensitive information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government has been urged to review the law on licensing\/ownership of the broadcast media to save the industry from collapse.
