{"id":10026,"date":"2010-03-29T00:27:26","date_gmt":"2010-03-29T04:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=10026"},"modified":"2010-03-29T00:27:26","modified_gmt":"2010-03-29T04:27:26","slug":"crime-fighting-police-boss-woos-private-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetidenewsonline.com\/?p=10026","title":{"rendered":"Crime Fighting: Police Boss Woos Private Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Worried over the high rate of crime in Nigeria, the Enugu state\u00a0\u00a0 Commissioner of Police,\u00a0 Mr. Mohammed Zarewa,\u00a0 has called for\u00a0 private sector partnership with the\u00a0 Nigerian Police Force (NPF) as a means of fighting crime in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Such\u00a0 collaboration, he said,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 was crucial in the war against crime fighting and prevention in Nigeria, adding\u00a0 that\u00a0 government alone cannot provide all the needed equipment and logistics needed by the police force to wage a serious war against crime in the society.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 According to him ,\u00a0 Lagos State police command could boast of\u00a0 its crime fighting capabilities today because the state government and the private sector are actively supporting the command with working instruments and funds, saying\u00a0 that the Enugu command could achieve better result if it\u00a0 enjoys such overwhelming\u00a0 support and encouragement from the private sector and the state government.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0Zerewa, who made his feelings known in Enugu\u00a0 during the\u00a0 commissioning of the Senior Police Officers\u2019 mess renovated by Nigerian Breweries\u00a0 Plc,\u00a0 however\u00a0 declared\u00a0 that\u00a0 his command would\u00a0 have also liked\u00a0 to own\u00a0 helicopters, vehicles and communication gadgets like its counterpart\u00a0 in Lagos, saying that since\u00a0 government alone cannot provide such items, then\u00a0 there is need for the private sector to support the command by emulating the shinning example of the Nigerian Breweries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 His words:\u00a0 \u201cAs part of their\u00a0 corporate socio responsibility, there is the need\u00a0 for the private sector to always collaborate\u00a0 with officers and\u00a0 men of the Nigerian Police Force in their\u00a0 efforts to rid\u00a0 the nation of hoodlums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 On\u00a0 the current state of the community\u00a0 policing project in the coal city state, Mr. Zarewa\u00a0\u00a0 assured\u00a0\u00a0 that the programme was waxing stronger, stressing\u00a0 that it has recorded\u00a0 a lot of positive feat in the area of intelligence gathering and crime prevention and control in the state since inception. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are saying the Lagos police command is performing.\u00a0 But they forget that it has companies helping it with equipment and logistics. I think they have about two helicopters. If other companies support us like Nigeria Breweries here, we will achieve great results too\u201d, he assured.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0In his remarks on the occasion, the Managing Director \/Chief Executive\u00a0 Officer, NB Plc, Mr. Paul Hamers,\u00a0 explained\u00a0 that the renovation of the Police officers\u00a0 Mess ,\u00a0 took more time and resources than initially envisaged because the company was determined to give senior police officers a befitting place to relax and socialise.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u201cI want to use this opportunity to once again commend the police command in Enugu state for the great support and cooperation\u00a0 we have enjoyed over the years.\u00a0 We appreciate your prompt response to our calls.\u00a0 The special attention you have always accorded our Ama brewery is worthy of commendation.\u00a0 For us, the police has indeed been a true and reliable friend.\u00a0 On our part, we shall continue to identify with you always .\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 The NB boss, who spoke through the Media Affairs Manager,\u00a0 NB Plc AMA, Mrs. Emete Tonukari ,\u00a0 said\u00a0 the\u00a0 organisation\u00a0 through the project had been able to\u00a0 strengthen her relationship with the police force in Enugu state, assuring that the relationship would be sustained .\u00a0 According to him, the gesture was part of the\u00a0 organisation\u2019s corporate socio responsibility , noting that\u00a0 \u201cA few years ago, we were approached by police authorities in Enugu to assist with the renovation of this mess which was fast deteriorating and no longer serving the purpose it was meant for.
