Rundele Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State has concluded plans to abolish the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), marking a significant step in the protection of women’s rights.
The Nyenweli and Paramount Ruler of the community, Eze Demian Ejiohuo, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of an event organised by ActionAid Nigeria for traditional rulers in Port Harcourt.
Eze Ejiohuo revealed that all arrangements have been finalised for the abolition, which is expected to take effect on May 31, 2026. He noted that the process, including traditional rites, will cost over ¦ 10 million.
“All the necessary materials required for the process have been procured. By May 31, 2026, Rundele will be counted among communities that have abolished female circumcision,” he said.
The monarch added that members of the community, particularly youths, have expressed support and enthusiasm for the decision.
Speaking earlier at the event, Eze Ejiohuo highlighted the role of Ikwerre customs and traditions in safeguarding women’s dignity, noting that certain cultural norms prohibit indecent or harmful treatment of women.
He commended ActionAid Nigeria for its sustained advocacy against gender-based violence (GBV) and emphasised the need for effective implementation of laws protecting women and other vulnerable groups.
Eze Ejiohuo, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly and former Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, also praised the people of Rundele for their peaceful disposition and urged them to maintain unity as the community embraces progressive reforms.
The planned abolition of FGM in Rundele is seen as a major milestone in ongoing efforts to eliminate harmful traditional practices and promote the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls in Rivers State.
