Gunmen Kill Two At Omoku As Police Vow To Nab Perpetrators
In what seems to be a renewed cult war in Omoku, Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed two persons in the area.
The Tide learnt that the incident took place last Thursday at about 6p.m. at a popular drinking spot along Ogolo Street, off Palace Road, where the assailants reportedly launched the attack.
Eyewitness said the gunmen, numbering about seven, arrived at the scene in two mask vehicles, and opened fire on sighting the President of Omoku Youth Federation, Comrade Ifeanyi Azuazu, and his personal aide, Mr.Chigozie Oluwu. The incident led to the instant killing of the aide, Oluwu.
The attackers were said to have pointed guns at Azuazu and ordered him to enter one of the vehicles, creating panic among residents and passersby in the area.
During the confrontation, Oluwu allegedly attempted to intervene but was shot dead on the spot by the assailants.
The gunmen later forcefully abducted Azuazu and sped away, leaving residents and business owners in fear as shops were hurriedly closed and people fled for safety.
The ONELGA Security and Peace Planning Advisory Committee (OSPAC) confirmed the incident.
According to the OSPAC, the headless body of Comrade Azuazu was later recovered last Friday afternoon in a forest at Omoku.
The spokesperson for OSPAC, Mr. Godnews Nkem, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, said that Azuazu’s corpse was found during a coordinated security operation in the area.
Nkem also hinted that while Oluwu was shot dead during the attack, Azuazu was taken away and was beheaded.
He appealed to Omoku residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, including the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure that those responsible are apprehended.
The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko also confirmed the incident.
Iringe-Koko asserted that the killing was cult related, saying the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full scale investigation into the incident, with a view to apprehending the perpetrators.
