GBV Sensitization Programme Garners Positive Response In Ogu Community
Stakeholders in Ogu Town, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, have commended the Rivers State Multi-Stakeholder Action Committee on Gender Based Violence (GBV) Prevention for their recent sensitization programme in the Community.
The Chairman of Ogu Divisional Council of Chiefs, Chief Lawrence Abiabiari, who spoke on behalf of the Council,, described the programme as a “welcome development” and an “eye-opener” for many attendees.
Represented by Chief Stephen Mina- Omubo, the Chairman stated that the event had shed light on issues such as rape and abandonment, noting that ”some community members were previously unaware that women can also be perpetrators of rape”.
Chief Omubo thanked the group for addressing these topics and expressed hope that the lessons learnt would be shared with others in the community.
He called for regular hosting of the GBV sensitization and assured of their community’s backing.
In her remarks, the Coordinator of the Rivers State MultiStakeholder Action Committee on GBV, Barr. Evelyn Membere-Asimiea, said the programme aimed to educate the community on GBV issues and empower them with knowledge to prevent and respond to cases.
While thanking their sponsors – ActionAid Nigeria and Ford Foundation – for their support, Barr. Membere-Asimiea, described the sensitization as “very impressive”, given the large turnout that exceeded their expectations.
She also noted that survivors of GBV can access support services at the Rivers State Sexual Assault Referral Centre at No. 32 Nembe Street, Borokiri, Port Harcourt, managed by the Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, or contact the Office of the Public Defender, Ministry of Justice for GBV-related issues.
She also revealed plans of the committee to take the campaign to other LGAs across the state, including Ikwerre LGA.
“We plan to replicate this success in other communities to create a safer environment for all in Rivers State”, she stated.
Earlier, the Head of Advocacy Sub-Committee in the group, Barr. Ere Boma, in her presentation, explained GBV, the various types like sexual, domestic, economic, and psychological violence.
Barr. Boma urged the participants to take action against GBV, support survivors and promote a culture of respect and equality in their communities.
The programme, themed “Ending Gender Based Violence Starts with Us”, featured discussions on GBV awareness, rights, and support services, questions and answers sessions with attendees, including traditional rulers, community leaders, women, civil society organisations, and some committee members.
