The Nigerian Navy, on Friday, inaugurated a new jetty at Uta Ewa, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, as part of measures to boost maritime security.
Speaking at the event, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Eastern Naval Command, Rear Adm. Chidozie Okehie, said jetties played critical roles in strengthening navy’s operational reach.
Okehie, who recently assumed office as the FOC, Eastern Command, said he had already begun familiarisation visits to units under the Command.
“This jetty is essential to maintaining permanent naval presence in this coastal area. It will enable our personnel to ensure prompt responses to security threats.
“This facility will enhance navy’s surveillance capabilities, and ensure the safety of sea lines of communication”, he said.
The naval officer further said that the project was championed by the Nigerian Navy Shipyard (NNS), Jubilee, Ikot Abasi.
Okehie said the project aligned with the broader vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, which aimed to maintain a modern and professional naval service.
“The vision prioritises improvement of operational capacity, personnel welfare, and civil-military cooperation to safeguard the nation’s maritime interests”, he said.
During an interactive session with the base’s staff, the FOC reiterated his commitment to supporting the enhancement of operational effectiveness within the Command.
