NPFL: Yusuf target 20 goals milestone
The forward scored 18 goals last campaign, finishing as the league’s top scorer. His award presentation had been delayed due to his involvement with Nigeria at the Africa Nations Championship with the Super Eagles B.
Speaking after collecting the accolade, Yusuf said the recognition has inspired him to set new targets.
“I’m happy to be recognised by the NPFL. This award motivates me to push harder, and I hope to surpass my goal-scoring record from last season and hopefully score more than 20 goals,” he said.
Yusuf’s target is significant, with no player scoring more than 20 goals in an NPFL season since Mfon Udoh’s record 23 strikes for Enyimba in 2014.
The closest efforts in recent years include Anthony Okpotu and Junior Lokosa, who both hit 19, as well as Chijioke Akuneto in 2022.
Yusuf dedicated the honour to his support system and emphasised the role of his club in his rise.
“I am truly humbled to receive this prestigious award. Let me thank God Almighty, my family, teammates, coaches, management, and entire club for their relentless support. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without their support, hard work, and dedication,” he said.
He added in an interview with Nasarawa United, “My deepest gratitude to the league organisers for the recognition, and to the supporters, fans and media for their love, solidarity and projection. I am looking forward to an exciting new league season, God keeping us alive and healthy.”
The NPFL also honoured Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede, who guided the club to their first-ever league title with 71 points. His side became the first privately-owned club from South-West Nigeria since 2000 to win the championship.
League chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye said consistency in recent years had boosted confidence among sponsors.
“We continue to work around the teething issues that could disrupt the smooth running of the league. Over the last three years, we’ve been able to start and finish the season as scheduled. This consistency has built confidence in the private sector, which is now willing to work with us. Our dream is to raise the quality and standard of the NPFL, ultimately increasing revenue for clubs and organisers,” he said.
