RSG Pledges To Collaborate With ICAN To Promote Good Governance …Awaits ICAN Recommendations
The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), has expressed optimism that the ongoing 8th Southern Zonal Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) will yield actionable recommendations to advance a sustainable and resilient economic model for the state and the nation.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by ICAN delegates led by its President, Malam Haruna Nma Yahaya, at the Government House in Port Harcourt, last Friday, Ibas commended ICAN for its enduring contributions to national development through high professional standards, continuous training, and advocacy for institutional integrity.
“Here in Rivers State, we particularly commend ICAN’s policy of direct engagement with state governments and stakeholders across the federation. Your presence is timely as we deepen our efforts in fiscal responsibility, transparent governance, and sustainable development,” he stated.
The conference, themed “Eco-Disruption and Sustainable Challenges in Nigeria: The Way Forward,” addresses critical environmental issues, particularly those affecting the Niger Delta region.
The Administrator, according to a statement by his Senior Special Adviser on Media, Hector Igbikiowubo, described the theme as timely and relevant, given the increasing environmental, social, and economic disruptions facing Nigeria.
He acknowledged Rivers State’s unique position as both resource-rich and environmentally vulnerable, emphasizing the government’s readiness to collaborate with professional bodies like ICAN to develop innovative and interdisciplinary solutions for sustainable development.
Ibas reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to collaborating with professional institutions like ICAN to foster economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and good governance for the benefit of all citizens.
“As a government, we recognise the strategic value of partnering with professional bodies such as ICAN. We remain committed to strengthening governance, improving financial accountability, and building institutions that serve our people with integrity,” he added.
In his response, ICAN President, Malam Yahaya stated that Rivers State was deliberately chosen to host the conference due to its strategic economic and environmental significance.
He assured that the conference communiqué would provide valuable insights for policy-making at both state and federal levels.
Yahaya also informed the Administrator of ICAN’s upcoming 55th International Conference, scheduled for October 6, 2025, which is expected to attract over 13,000 accountants globally.
He extended an invitation to the Administrator to attend the opening ceremony and sought the state’s support in sponsoring Rivers State accountants to participate in the landmark event.
