Constitution Review: Senate Vows To Address Citizens Concerns
Speaking at the weekend during the North West Zonal public hearing on Constitutional Review in Kano, Senator Jibrin stressed the Senate’s determination to respond to the public’s calls for constitutional changes.
He explained that, as a legislative body representing the interests of the people, the National Assembly has a vital duty to address these demands.
He said the committee had received hundreds of memoranda addressing key issues unresolved by previous amendments, mainly due to a lack of national consensus and the evolving dynamics of modern governance.
These memoranda, he stated, included proposals for electoral reforms and adjudication, judicial reforms focused on case management and administration, enhancements to local government administration, the involvement of traditional institution in contemporary governance, and the promotion of human rights, among others.
He urged participants to share their insights and contributions with an open mind, assuring them that the committee will consider all viewpoints and perspectives.
He also indicated that the committee has no preconceived opinions but will be guided by legislative best practices, bearing in mind the highest ethical standards, integrity, open-mindedness, and patriotism.
He recognised the collaborative efforts of their colleagues in both the House of Representatives and the State Houses of Assembly and sought the support of the executive and judiciary, noting their fundamental roles in executing the will of the people and enforcing the rule of law.
Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina state governments, as well as civic groups in the region, presented their respective submissions to the committee.
