A non-governmental group, the Eleme Patriotic Assembly (EPA) has urged the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to urgently establish an Oil Mineral Communities Development Commission in the State.
The group said this is in line with what obtains in Delta and other oil producing States in the country.
It made the call recently shortly after her meeting in Nchia, headquarters of Eleme Local Government Area (LGA), and signed by its President, Hon. Henry Mbie Osaro and Secretary, Comrade Nathaniel Okpabi respectively.
The group stressed that it is an irony that Rivers people who advocated for the establishment of the organisation to address the development of oil producing States which led to the defunct OMPADEC, which metamorphosed into Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) do not have such body.
It noted that by this development, the state does not have an agency of such to address issues experienced by oil producing communities.
The group urged Rivers State Government (RSG) to ensure that the Oil Mineral Communities Development Commission is put in place, noting that all past governors failed to establish since the clamour for it started in 1999.
“We are urging Rivers Elders and other stakeholders to engage the State Government and the Rivers State House of Assembly in this direction”, the group pleaded.
Meanwhile, the group has urged Rivers people to rise up against the monster of under-development and ensure that all their representatives should contribute their development quotas for the well-being of the people, instead of sitting on the fence complaining.
The organisation used the opportunity to commend Governor Siminalayi Fubara for providing quality service delivery to the people, despite distractions against the incumbent government.
