As the October 5, 2024, date for the local government elections draws closer, the Evo Unity Forum has endorsed Amb. Chijioke Ihunwo as their preferred candidate for the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area chairmanship position.
The leader of the group, Mr Emmanuel Ogbonda, made this known during a courtesy call on the Eze Oha Evo III of Evo Kingdom, King Leslie Eke, the Eze Gbakagbaka, at his palace in Woji, Obio/Akpor Local Government Arera, recently.
Ogbonda said that the choice of his group was to further the interest of natural justice, equity and fair play, while entreating all indigenes of Obio /Akpor to support the candidature of an Evo son.
He further argued that since other clans had previously enjoyed the support of the Evo people, it would be natural for others to reciprocate in like manner.
“It is a different political background. We can’t continue to keep quiet, we must speak out. We came because of the challenges on ground. Time has come for us to be open”, he said.
He said over the years there has been a sort of selection process in the leadership of Obio /Akpor which had not favoured the Evo man.
Part of the reason for the perceived unjust treatment of the Evo man in the Council’s leadership, he said, was due to some internal wrangling among them, hence the decision to work as a group.
He also noted that the group had earlier resolved to give all the required support and assistance for Governor Siminalayi Fubara to achieve stability and over all success in his administration.
Also speaking, a former Commissioner in the state, Sir Mike Ejims, said Evo had not spoken with one voice in political matters since 1999 and described the present political turmoil in the state as a good omen for the Evo man, noting that but for the present state of affairs, they would have not been liberated from some strong holds in the area.
He maintained the view that his people must utilise the opportunity by massively supporting Amb. Ihunwo to occupy the number one political seat in the local government.
Meanwhile, the Eze Gbakagbaka, who is also the Chairman of Ikwerre Government Recognised Traditional Rulers Council, assured them of doing his best as a royal father who is apolitical and appealed with the group not to play politics of rancor and acrimony in order to promote peace in line with the Governor’s vision.
