Rivers Angels Win Women President Federation Cup
Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt emerged champions of the prestigious Women’s President Federation Cup last Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, lifting the trophy for the nineth time after defeating Naija Ratels of Abuja.
In the play, Blessing Okpe’s first-half goal from the spot kick secured the victory for the Jewels of Rivers.
Head coach Whyte Ogbonda expressed relief and joy, having broken the jinx of losing cup finals in 2017 and 2018 while in charge of Ibom Angels. He credited the mix of experienced and young players for the success.
“The match wasn’t easy, but we had the right blend of players to win. I’m happy to have finally won a trophy as a head coach, which was a criteria used against me in the past. Now, I’m relieved and proud of my players.”
Rivers Angels players also won individual awards, with Blessing Okpe named Most Valuable Player and Agatha Thompson named Best Goalkeeper. The team took home the trophy and a 25 million naira prize.
