The Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project ( HYPREP), Prof Deinibarini Zabbey, has assured Ogoni youths of the sustainable clean-up of Ogoniland in Rivers State, saying the Federal Government is highly committed to the clean-up project.
Zabbey, who gave the assurance on the heels of his reinstatement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while addressing the youths in Port Harcourt, thanked them for their support and ownership of the Ogoni clean-up project.
The Project Coordinator said the Minister of Environment, Hon Balarabe Abbas Lawal had asked him to reassure the youths that the Federal Government was highly committed to the clean-up project.
While thanking President Tinubu for prioritising the Ogoni clean-up in the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration, Zabbey hinted that HYPREP would in the next three weeks meet with the youths to discuss how to move the clean-up project forward.
He also assured the youths that HYPREP would deliver a sustainable clean-up that is inclusive, which all Ogoni people would be proud of.
The Project Coordinator also indicated in an interview with newsmen that this period is very busy for HYPREP, as there are about 130 projects going on concurrently in Ogoniland and several livelihood programmes lined up by the Project in the coming weeks and months.
He noted that HYPREP is targeting to provide about 7,000 direct employment to the youths as well as create a lot of jobs for them, stressing that it is committed to building their capacity to enable them to also work elsewhere while providing them the necessary support.
Zabbey equally hinted that HYPREP would soon commence the training of Ogoni traditional rulers on alternative dispute resolution mechanism, to enable them to effectively manage conflicts in their respective domains, in consonance with one of the objectives of HYPREP, which is to promote peace building.
According to him, training and strengthening the capacity of the traditional rulers would further foster peace and stability in their communities.
The Project Coordinator said HYPREP is committed to resetting the Ogoni environment, as well as recovering the biodiversity of the area, through all its projects and programmes, to make the clean-up truly sustainable not only for the present generation but also the future generations.
