The Tide Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) yesterday elected a new executive council to run the affairs of the union for the next three years.

The newly inaugurated council members include John Bibor as Chairman, Francis Edookor Kiadum as Vice Chairman, Kevin Nengia as Secretary and Ibioye Idiama as Treasurer.

The positions of Financial Secretary, Auditor and Assistant Secretary are to be filled through a bye-election at a later date.

While inaugurating the new Executive Council, the NUJ Chairman, Rivers State Council, Comrade Stanley Job Stanley represented by his Vice Chairman, Mr. Okechuwkwu Maru, underscored service as the heart of unionism.

He reminded the new Executives that service is the hallmark of any leader who is ready to leave lasting impression on the people.

He charged the new Executives to be alive to their duties and responsibilities and ensure they work in tandem with the objectives of the NUJ.

The State NUJ Secretary, Comrade Ike Wigodo, on his part, said he was not impressed by the failure of the immediate past Executives to meet the expectations of the union in terms of payment of dues and fees for members.

He, therefore, charged the incoming Executives to ensure they leave new imprints and improve on the past records.

The General Manager of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, Chief Ernest Chinwo, in his speech, promised to work with the new NUJ Executives to improve the working conditions and operations of the corporation.

Chief Chinwo, who was represented by the RSNC Director of Administration, Mrs. Nkechi Bright-Ewere, reminded the new Executives of their responsibility, urging them to leave good legacies behind.

Chairman of the newly inaugurated Executives, John Bibor, assured that his administration would start on a new slate to reposition the NUJ in the Tide Newspaper.

While decrying paucity of funds as a major challenge, Bibor assured that, “We shall give good account of ourselves and do our best” adding that, “our obligation to the State Council is total.”

The Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Mrs. Eunice Kayode, had earlier said that the new executive members were duly screened and expressed hope they would do well to meet expectations.

Among those present at the inauguration ceremony include The Tide’s Group News Editor, Mr Boye Salau; Op-Ed/Features Editor, Dr (Mrs) Sylvia ThankGod-Amadi; former State Chairman of NUPPRROW, Dr. Godwin Williams, and the State Chairman  of AUPCTRE, Mr Ibinabo Tobins.
