President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, received Bassirou Faye, president of Senegal, at the State House, Abuja.
President Faye was on his first official visit to Nigeria since April when he was inaugurated as the fifth democratically elected president of Senegal.
On March 24, Senegal held its presidential election after numerous postponements.
Before the vote, Faye was detained alongside Ousmane Sanko, his political mentor, who was accused of “defamation” among other offences.
Faye and Sanko were released from detention 10 days before the commencement of the electoral campaign after an amnesty law was passed.
In the presidential poll, Faye defeated Amadou Ba, Senegal’s former Prime Minister, and won 54 percent of the votes cast.
Faye succeeded President Macky Sall, who had ruled since 2012.
On April 2, he was sworn in as the fifth president of the West African country.
President Tinubu, who doubles as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was among heads of state and governments who were in Senegal to witness the inauguration.
