DELGA Chair Pledges Support To Secondary Schools Board
The Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has pledged his administration’s support to the LGA Chapter of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board.
Williams, who pledged his support to the Board recently during a familiarisation visit by the Board at the Council’s Secretariat, commended members of the Board for coming to intimate the Council with their programmes and challenges.
Noting that any leader, who is desirous of a better society, would always prioritize education and give it all necessary support, he directed the Council Secretary, Hon. Nicolas Harry, to carryout an inspection on the level of dilapidation of the office building of the Schools Board, and report back to the Council for necessary action.
The Council Chairman stated that the Council would in the interim provide an alternative office space within the Council Secretariat for the smooth operation of the Board.
“We shall see your office to ascertain what can be done, but if we cannot fix it immediately, we shall provide an office space for you in the interim within the Council”, he assured.
On the request for logistic support to carryout some activities and programmes for secondary schools in the LGA, the Council Chairman assured that his administration would give all necessary support to encourage school activities.
Earlier in her address, Zonal Director of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, Mrs. Otonba Karibo, disclosed that the visit was to familiarize themselves with the Council Chairman, having assumed duty about three weeks ago.
She commended the Council Chairman over his administration’s giant strides, adding, “we are witnesses to your giant strides in the administration of this Local Government Area. It is on record that you have impacted positively on all the communities that make up Degema LGA.
“Your youth empowerment programme, which saw many undergraduates benefit from an education grant, is most commendable.
“We are aware that you have also supported some schools in the zone with finance to solve some teething challenges”.
Mrs. Karibo used the occasion to appeal to the Council Chairman for support to carry out some programmes for schools in the area, such as inter-schools debate, quiz, variety day and sports competitions.
The Zonal Director, who also appealed for logistic support for periodic inspection of schools across the LGA, appealed for rehabilitation of the dilapidated office of the Board, or an alternative office space elsewhere.
