The Paramount Ruler of Obunku-Ndoki Kingdom in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, Eze Isaac Nwogbo, has lamented the spate of insecurity and economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians, calling on President Bola Tinubu to save the situation by reenacting his reputed developmental magic- wand that saw him succeed as Governor of Lagos State.
Speaking with The Tide recently on the state of the nation, Eze Nwogbo said that many Nigerians voted for President Tinubu because of his reputation as the ‘man who built Lagos as governor’, in the run up to the 2023 presidential election.
He said Lagos remained Nigeria’s biggest economy and is currently estimated at $133billion, noting that it is believed to be sustained by Tinubu’s political mentees who have been governors since 2007.
“Tinubu was Lagos State governor between 1999 and 2007 and has been instrumental in installing his successors since after his exit from office”, he said.
Eze Nwogbo, who is the Nwankume of Ndoki land, however, said that nine months into his government as Nigeria’s president, protests have spread across the length and breath of the country over rising cost of food and fuel, as well as, the inability of majority of Nigerians to feed themselves.
He noted that the naira has collapsed against other currencies, closing at N1,710 against the dollar, N2,120 against the British Pound and N1,815 to the Euro recently.
“What I suspect is that the dollar may hit N2,000 mark by the third week of March, 2024, except something extraordinary happens. That will be a record high and will result in more misery for Nigerians, especially the poor masses”, the monarch said.
He also said that the severity of the situation is underlined by the fact that protests over hunger have spread in the South-West of Nigeria, the president’s home base where he secured more votes than any of his contenders in the 2023 presidential poll.
