President of Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof Benjamin Okaba, has warned on the consequences of any new clandestine plots by the embattled Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara through trumped up charges.
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital, last Wednesday, Okaba said, “We have on good information that the next move is to serve Governor Fubara impeachment notice.
“INC will not welcome such. Fubara is a son of Ijaw nation, and we will defend him, as long as he has not done anything unconstitutional”.
The apex Ijaw socio-political group insisted that Rivers State does not belong to one person or ethnic group, and recalled how it rallied support for the appointment of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, amid strong opposition in 2023.
The INC also recalled its strong support for Wike in the 2014-2015 political crisis, which culminated in his election in 2015 as Governor of the state, adding that if not for the support of Ijaw nation, he could not have emerged as governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014.
The umbrella body of Ijaw people noted that for eight years, Ijaw people rallied round Wike to make sure he had a successful tenure in office.
Okaba, therefore, urged Wike to reciprocate same gesture to Fubara, by allowing him to govern the state without distractions.
“We call for peace and urge that the Governor be allowed to carry out his constitutional duties”, he said.
The body also reminded Ijaw sons who are part of the embattled House of Assembly to have a rethink on their stance.
“We believe that all these anti-Fubara postures by some of them is induced by money. We urge them to be cautious and rethink their stance”, Okaba declared.
