The safety of passengers and movement of people and goods between Rivers and Bayelsa State has been described as key economic driver of both states.
A transport expert, Chief Francis Esinyefagha in a chat with The Tide Metro said currently, the government needs to intervene to reduce theft and other hassles that passengers travelling from Port Harcourt to Yenagoa face.
He stressed that the State Taskforce on Illegal Parking and Street Trading needs to enforce the law passed by the state Assembly to ensure orderliness and safety.
“As it’s now,” he stated,” there is no orderliness in the transportation business. Passengers are at the mercy of Agberos and most times, goods are stolen from passengers.”
If the Taskforce intervenes, Chief Esinyefagha believes that vehicles which load and carry passengers on the road will be compelled to load inside approved parks.
The transport expert, who has been in the business for over 25 years decried a situation where passengers are picked along the road since laws are not enforced.
“We have a conducive motorpark by the flyover at Mile 1 with toilets and waiting halls, yet, many of the transporters prefer loading on the road side. That is creating traffic problems and is not safe for passengers” he warned.
Chief Esinyefagha pleaded that the two state governments can synergise to ensure smooth transport system between the two sister States.
One way to achieve that, he explained is to assist transporters in raising their fleets and providing conducive atmosphere for travellers.
