Stop Extorting Students, IAUE VC Warns Staff
Acting Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rivers State, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, has warned staff of the institution to desist from extorting money from students in whatever guise.
He said they either stop it, or face the consequences of their actions.
Onuchuku gave the warning recently during an emergency Senate Meeting which held at the Postgraduate Hall of the university.
The VC, who affirmed that students pay dues that are centrally distributed to all concerned, advised Departments to make use of what is given to them from such dues for their needs and resist the temptation of collecting additional money from these students.
Noting that “the current harsh realities on ground was affecting everyone”, he admonished staff not to add to the pains and challenges of the students.
The Chairman of Senate frowned at those collecting huge sums of money for file jacket and indigenship and described it as sheer wickedness.
He, therefore, directed that the University’s Bookshop and Printing Press Director be in charge of printing of the file jackets and distribute same to all Departments for their use.
He also instructed that those who have already collected money from students for file jackets and non-indigenship to immediately refund such money or face the full wrath of the university’s law.
While stressing that such fees were not approved by the university, he implored staff to stop tarnishing the image of the university with unethical practices and advised them to device better and legal ways of making money.
Professor Onuchuku announced that the University would vacate for the Christmas holidays on Monday December 18, 2023 and resume on Monday January 8, 2024.
Later, in the company of members of Senate, he commissioned the fencing and security post projects embarked upon for the safety of female students in the hostels.
