A Professor of Climatology in the Rivers State University, Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, Prof Precious Nwobidi Ede, has called on the Federal Government to continue to put pressure on those who are despoiling the environment.
Ede made the call recently, during the 94th inaugural lecture of the Rivers State University, with the topic, “Decoupling Spatial Decision Support Mechanisms In Atmospheric Crisis”.
He said that government should try to continue to supply those things that are lacking in society like petroleum products, adding that government should supply those items lacking in a genuine manner so that people are not tempted or given the window to go and pollute the environment in the course of filling the gap.
Ede, who was one time Chairman of the Decision Planning and Framework Committee on Soot in Rivers State said that in the course of his lecture, he was trying to show what the study of Geography and Climate does in humanity.
He said that Geography and Climate are one of those things we should embrace for humanbeings to live well on earth.
He said that people have benefitted from the lecture because they now know how to live well and in a such a way that they can harmonise.
“What we are doing so far is to attack the environment in a negative way and by that the environment reacts and makes us uncomfortable and sometimes kills us,” he said.
He pointed out that soot is not over yet but that it has reduced, adding that it was the efforts of his team that worked and discovered the challenge and how soot came about and what can be done to reduce it or eliminate it.
“I think today we are living better than before during the period of soot. Government should continue to put pressure on those who are despoiling the environment.
Government should try and continue to supply those things that are lacking like petroleum products,” he said.
