CAFCC: Eguma Promises Better Performance In Group Stage
The Technical Manager of Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt, Stanley Eguma has promised Nigerians to do better in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC), after they defeated Etoile Filante de Quagadougou of Burkina Faso in the second preliminary round to qualifiy for the group stage.
According to him, his team struggled against Etoile Filante because they lacked competitive games prior to the match, adding that now that the league has commenced, they are going to do better.
Eguma made the promise last Sunday in his post match interview with sports journalists shortly after they defeated Etoile Filante de Quagadougou 2-0 in the final game of the second preliminary round of CAF Confederation Cup at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
He described the resumption of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), is a welcome development for his players adding that training week in and week out without any competition is not helpful for players playing in the Continental.
“ I am very optimistic that going to the group stage of the CAFCC, we are going to do more better than what we did today.
“ Most of my players have not played continental football before and there were no league football competition to shape them up, now that the league has resumed, it is good for us.
“ The resumption of the league is going to give us good preparation for the group stage of the CAFCC.
“ By the time they play more games in the continent, they will be used to it and they will do better” Eguma said.
The pride of Rivers helmsman noted that the game against Etoile Filante was not an entirely bad game because they actually prepared to get victory in the game.
“ We know that our opponents were coming to give us tough time and we really prepared well for them.
“ The hope of Nigerian was on this game so we did not want to take any unnecessary risk to get the victory.
“Pressure was so much on the players for them to get goals” he said.
He thanked God for the show of character by his players, especially bouncing back later to get the two goals.
