RSG Restates Commitment To Women Education

The Rivers State Government has said it is committed towards the promotion of education among women in the state.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Roseline Apawari Uranta, said this at an occasion to mark the 2023  international Women Literacy Day organized by the ministry in Port Harcourt.
The theme for the celebration was “Promoting Literacy For A world In Transition: Building the ground work for sustainable peaceful societies” with the slogan, “Let’s  teach and make the country literate”.
The Commissioner, who described education as the bedrock of any Society, said everybody needs to know how to read and write to achieve a reasonable level of literacy and educational development.
She said women are very active in the labour force and business and therefore need to understand some literacy techniques such as financial, digital and communication skills to function effectively.
“Access to education is a human rights and a tool for personal growth, empowerment and development”, she said, adding that the State Government has been in the forefront of promoting the education of women and young girls.
“The ministry once operated an Adult literacy centre for Women. In this 21st century, the World is moving towards digital literacy which enables people to effectively connect, interact effectively and communicate with the World”, she said.
According to her, having proper literacy will enable women challenge themselves, better the environment and eradicate poverty, immorality and depopulate the society amongst others.
Dr. Uranta described the celebration as apt, stressing that “it would build our ability to learn appropriate business and communication skills, digital and work at home business models.
“It will create awareness and open doors to new career development”.
Speaking on the topic, “Financial Literacy, a Pathway to Growing Successful Business”, Dr Mrs Bello Abu urged the women to set specific goals by creating a budget for every of their transactions.
Bello also charged the women to regularly view their financial statements while unwanted expenses should be avoided.
She further enjoined them to avail themselves of the opportunities created by various women business groups for the purpose of self development.
On her part, Dr Glory Kaine Chukwuneke urged the women to sharpen their communication skills to enable them succeed in business.
Meanwhile, some participants who attended the programm commended the State Government for the event which they said has enabled tehm to know more about the value of literacy.
Vice Chairman of Opobo Nkoro Local Government Area, Dr Angela Anthony Oju Kienmie, said the event was timely.
She also urged the women to avoid frivolous spending, while urging more women to engage themselves in petty businesses.
Other participants also commended the State Government for bringing back the celebration to the state.
