NFF Approves NPFL Name Change
The Nigerian top-flight has been rechristened the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The new name was adopted at the Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, in Uyo yesterday.
The top-flight was previously called the Nigeria Professional Football League.
A date for the commencement of the 2023-24 NPFL season is yet to be announced.
Enyimba won the 2022-23 NPFL title.
Meanwhile, one of the NPFL teams,Gombe United played out a 1-1 draw against Katsina United in a pre-season competition in Kaduna.
Mohammed Babaganaru’s side took the lead through Samson Ola before Katsina United restored parity.
Gombe United was the better side in the game.
The game was Babaganaru’s first since his appointment as the head coach of Gombe United.
The experienced tactician took charge of the Savannah Scorpions a few weeks ago.
His side will battle Sporting Lagos in their Nigeria Professional Football League opener on a yet-to-be-announced date.
The experienced tactician said he will work tirelessly in assembling a team that will fight to succeed.
“To the supporters and people of Gombe state, there shouldn’t be so much expectation on the team,” he said in his acceptance speech.
“Building a new team isn’t a day’s affair, we need to be patient and prayerful.
“With time Gombe United will be competitive,”
Gombe United will kick-start their campaign against Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos Onikan on September 16.
