A non- governmental organisation, Gborogbosi Foundation, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps Commission (FRSC), has begun the sensitisation of drivers and motorists on safety during the “ember” months.
The Tide Metro learnt that the initiative forms part of the year-end festive period activities of the FRSC, as this year’s exercise is being jointly hosted with the Gborogbosi Foundation, a community development and public-oriented body for road users in Rivers State.
The campaign titled, “Drive to Stay Alive,” aims to educate road users on safer road practices and promote responsible driving to reduce the number of road carnages during the holiday season,” the foundation’s Founder and Executive Chairman, Dr. Leesi Gborogbosi said.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Rivers State unveiled the commencement and was represented by the Public Enlightenment and Education Officer in Rivers State.
On his part, Emmanuel Nyiadoo, the programme officer of the Gborogbosi Foundation promised to work with the Rivers State FRSC team to ensure the campaign’s success.
The “Drive to Stay Alive” campaign focuses on eight essential traffic rules that road users and drivers should obey to ensure road safety.
The rules include avoiding drinking and driving, avoiding speeding, regular engine checks, avoiding overloading, wearing seat belts, avoiding making calls while driving, and passengers speaking up when drivers disobey traffic regulations.
The campaign kicked off with an official opening ceremony at the Abali Motor Park in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The event featured safety lectures, distribution of flyers, and mounting of banners. The campaign also took place in three other parks in Port Harcourt.
To reach a wider audience, the Gborogbosi Foundation produced enlightenment jingles that were aired on local radio stations. The jingles reinforce the importance of responsible driving and the need for road users to obey traffic rules. The campaign’s impact was felt, as road users acknowledged the need for such initiatives to promote road safety.
A driver, Kelechi Aguchi, who commended the safety campaign, said, “I commend the Foundation and the Federal Road Safety Corps for this because it makes us to be alert and more cautious while driving. Only a far-sighted leader can think in this direction. May we all embrace his vision.”
Another commercial bus driver, Okandu Elebim expressed happiness for the initiative and prayed for the Gborogbosi Foundation.
“We pray that God will improve on this great vision and the founder to serve and better our state where development will be even and reach us wherever we reside,” Elebim said.
The “Drive to Stay Alive” campaign is a preventive measure to ensure road users are alert to safety during the “Ember” months and holiday season.
“The collaboration between the FRSC and Gborogbosi Foundation according to the programme officer, Mr. Nyiadoo is a testament to the commitment to promote responsible driving and reduce accidents on the roads.
“It is hoped that such initiatives will continue to be implemented to ensure road safety and reduce the number of accidents on Nigerian roads”, he added.
