As part of its efforts to groom world-class athletes for the country, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Council of Rivers State has revealed plans for a grassroots development programme that will create opportunities for primary and secondary schools students in the area to hone their talents.
Speaking on the project, the council’s Chairman, Vincent Job, said he has discovered that sport is one unique thing that calms the youths, unites them and also tackles restiveness.
Job said the council has decided to leverage on opportunities in sport by creating the enabling environment for the youths to develop their talents.
He said: “Sports has helped to tame social vices… it brings the youths together and there is no enemy in football. It unites the youths, so, we plan to go into primary and secondary schools in ONELGA to catch them young.”
He noted that the stadium built in the area by former Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Felix Obuah, has helped to boost sporting activities in the area, adding that the presence of Go Round FC, set up by Obuah, has also improved footballing activities in the council.
